Slow Cooker Cabbage and Onions is a classic side dish that can be enjoyed with any main entree! It’s keto, low carb, gluten free and easy!

Cabbage is a classic vegetable no matter what type of diet you might be on. It’s a perfect low carb vegetable and many of us on the keto diet, love out cabbage. Boil it, steam, it, stir fry it, stuff it, you name it and you can make a million and one recipes using cabbage. While it’s certainly simple enough to stir fry it any day of the week, I chose a different route for this recipe I’m sharing today. Using the slow cooker saves me time not having to stand by the stove to cook a side dish for our meal. If my hubby is grilling outside and this is in the slow cooker, my work is done and I too can relax like the rest of the family. But besides the ease of using the slow cooker, the cabbage takes on a different flavor when all the delicious seasonings and onions have a change to hang out together cooking low and slow. If you’ve not tried it the slow cooker, don’t waste any more time!

Of course I opted to top our cabbage with crispy bacon because the salty, crunchy bite makes for a perfect mouth feel! Hubby enjoys adding some crushed red pepper flakes for a bit of a kick but that’s optional. Add more black pepper and garlic if you like. It’s pretty simple to taste and decide if you need more flavors, but what I’ve suggested here is what my go to is whenever I make it. I’m just happy with the bacon, but just enjoying the cabbage and onions on their own is acceptable in my book. 

Main entrees to enjoy with this dish would be Spiced Rubbed Pork Tenderloin, Beef Brisket , Short Ribs or even this Sticky Pork Belly! 

You could even just throw in some sliced kielbasa and let that cook with the cabbage and onions, then dinner is really done! It may not be the most exciting recipe I’ve created on my blog, but it is a staple in my house even before being keto and low carb. Even my kids love cabbage and onions so it’s a win every time I make it!

Slow Cooker Cabbage and Onions

Ingredients

  • 1/4
    cup
    bone broth
  • 12
    cups
    cabbage
    chopped or shredded (1 large head)
  • 2
    cups
    onions
    sliced
  • 2
    tbsp
    extra virgin olive oil
  • 2
    tsp
    minced garlic
  • 2
    tsp
    ground cumin
  • 1
    tsp
    ground mustard
  • 1
    tsp
    salt
  • 1/2
    tsp
    pepper
  • optional crushed red chili peppers
  • optional crispy bacon to top

Instructions

  1. Pour bone broth into the slow cooker then add all remaining ingredients. Stir to combine well. 

  2. Cover and cook on low 5-6 hours or until tender to your liking. 

  3. QUICK TIP: Sub 24 ounces of pre shredded coleslaw mix to save time instead of chopping a head of cabbage.
